Week Five Picks
Here’s what you all are waiting for… right?
Just thought I would throw some thoughts out about this week’s matchups in the NFL. Oh and these are all straight up picks, no spreads for me.
Chicago at Detroit
It’s a matchup of the two teams that were predicted to be at the bottom of the NFC North, and so far, only Detroit is cooperating. However, they have tons of talent *cough cough* no seriously , they have some good talent, and I can’t believe that they let go Matt Millen. Okay, I almost made it through that with a straight face, alas I cannot. Here is something that will put me on the map though; the final score: Detroit 31, Chicago 30
Atlanta at Green Bay
Okay now Green Bay has had a couple of bad things happen to them; first they had to play the Cowboys, their first real test with Aaron Rodgers, and I would say that they passed, even though they lost the game. Next, they had to play Tampa Bay, and Rodgers got banged up a bit. It’s hard to throw when your shoulder is slightly seperated, or so I hear. Anyway, this week they have a surprisingly strong Atlanta Falcons team coming to town, and Rodgers may or may not play. Doesn’t matter: Green Bay 35 Atlanta 10
SanDiego at Miami
Should not be a game. Just like when Miami played New England. Will lightning strike twice? I doubt it.
SanDiego 42 Miami 6
Seattle at NY Giants
This one may be a surprise, a surprise if Seattle can field a competative team that is. God love Mike Holmgren, but he just doesn’t have the horses to do all the work for him. We’re talking about a team that is at the beginning of a long road back to prominence. Of course, as last week proved, any given Sunday. I just don’t think it will be this one: NY Giants 21 Seattle 10
Washington at Philadelphia
Don’t think that the Eagles missed Westbrook? Look at last week’s poor showing by the running offense, and you will be changing your opinion. Washington has been the team to beat the past three weekends, and got by a pretty tough Dallas team last week. Can they beat another division foe this week? Is Jason Campbell mature enough to survive the Eagles blitzes? This will be a great game and should be a close one: Philadelphia 24 Washington 21
Kansas City at Carolina
The Chiefs are on the road again this week, and will lose. Carolina 31 Kansas City 17
Tennessee at Baltimore
Another tough divisional game that should be a showcase for two very tough defensive squads, and while I don’t anticipate a score in the Auburn vs Mississippi St range (3-2), I don’t see either team breaking into double digits. If you like a good defensive game watch this one, and it will come down to a field goal as time expires… Tennessee 9 Baltimore 7
Indianapolis at Houston
This is a home opener for the Texans, since their game against Baltimore a few weeks back got postponed until November, because of Hurrican Ike. The Texans have had two weeks to prepare for a significantly weeker Indianapolis team, a team that they traditionally play tough. I think the Texans are going to make a real strong showing, in fact I see.. Houston 28 Indianapolis 27
Tampa Bay at Denver
I’m a homer and never pick against the Broncos, and they have something to prove after last week’s embarrassment… Denver 42 Tampa Bay 21
Cincinnati at Dallas
Dallas is mad that they lost to Washington, and Marvin Lewis is mad that he’s still in Cincy with this bad of misfits (okay, I made that last part up, but you wonder…) I see this being a real close matchup, seriously, because they did show something last week when they almost came back. Close is only good for horseshoes and hand gernades I’m afraid… Dallas 28 Cincinnati 10
Buffalo at Arizona
Two teams that are a big surprise, especially Buffalo at 4-0. The Kurt Warner Cardinals, whatever happened to wonder boy Matt Leinert, have a high-powered offense and can score at will it seems, but they still lack some maturity and can make dumb mistakes. I think this will be a close one, but Buffalo will enjoy the sun more… Buffalo 21 Arizona 17
New England at San Francisco
A lot of people are picking San Fran, are you kidding me? Have you seen what Belichek can do with two weeks to prepare for an opponent? Not to mention the fact that they lost their last game, at home even. Scary. New England 28 San Francisco 15
Pittsburgh at Jacksonville
I like the tie. This is one of those games where the matchups are so even that if the final score was 0-0, I wouldn’t be surprised. However, I think that Big Ben wants to prove to the fine folks in Pittsburgh that he still has it - whatever it is, and will lead his team to victory… Pittsburgh 18 Jacksonville 10
Minnesota at New Orleans
This Monday night matchup may have looked good in the preseason, but oy. I don’t see it going very well for the purple, despite a rejuvenated Gus Ferotte. Can they keep it close, sure. Can they get blown out? You betcha. Minnesota seems to be a team that is still looking for an identity. Who knows maybe this will be the week… Minnesota 28 New Orleans 24
There you have it, and only the weekend will tell if I am a complete imbicle or not.
Thanks for taking the time.
